Production Process

NatureRails™ are available in standard Six Foot, Eight Foot or Custom sizes to meet your steel railing requirements. All railing products are designed to meet the residential building code requirement of 4" or less open space in the design. You will go through a proof cycle process of your design and you may make alterations prior to manufacturing of the product. You will be assigned your own design assistant that works with yourself and the artist to create functional artwork for your home or business! Our large production facility can handle any size order.

Upon completion of the design process with the artist, your product will be cut out of steel on the water jet machine. Your NatureRails™ product starts with high quality pickled and oiled steel materials. Residential railing standard is 10 gauge (1/8th") thick & 30" tall. Commercial applications are designed per specifications. Many other materials are available if you are looking for something special such as stainless steel, copper or lexan.

Your NatureRails™ art is cut on a water jet machine which provides the most detailed and precise cut of our original designs by Rob Gerdin. The water jet cuts the steel with more than 50,000 p.s.i. of water and abrasive mix. The process is essentially the same as water erosion found in nature but greatly accelerated and concentrated. It is the preferred method when the materials being cut are sensitive to the high temperatures generated by other methods. This eliminates the heating of the product and burrs associated with plasma cutting.

If your project requires welding, it is done at this time. We can weld installation tabs, add square tubing frames to your products or complete hand and foot rail systems that are simple to install. Matching installation hardware is included.

Next, your product is quality checked for any defects in design, then prepared for powder coating by sand blasting. Sand blasting allows removal of any surface contaminants so that the powder coat can adhere directly to the surface of the product. Sand blasting is the best way to clean the surface since it forcibly propels a stream of abrasive material against a surface under high pressure to remove any particles that may have accumulated on the product during the cutting process.

NatureRails™ are coated with trusted Cardinal brand powder coat products in an array of colors to suit any décor. Powder coating allows for maximum protection against rust, cracking and fading, and is suitable for use indoors or out. Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. The coating is typically applied electrostatically and is then cured under heat to allow it to flow and form a "skin." Powder coatings emit zero or near zero volatile organic compounds (VOC). Powder coatings can produce much thicker coatings than conventional liquid coatings without running or sagging.

NatureRails™ recommends when installing your railing outdoors, especially in high humidity or salt water areas, that you ask for an additional powder coat application of primer prior to your color selection. Finally, your product is carefully packaged in a sturdy crate and banded. Delivery is made by UPS or ABF trucking and will arrive at your door in normally 3-5 days in the lower 48 states. Please allow additional time to other countries, Alaska and Hawaii.

Standard Railing

$1070.00 per design 30x72 (6 foot railing), 3-4 weeks lead time.

$1426.00 per design 30x96 (8 foot railing), 3-4 weeks lead time.

Custom Designed Railing

Custom designed railing is estimated at $210.00 per lineal foot at a standard height of 30" tall. This includes design time, materials, fabrication and powder coating. Three hours of design time are allotted per 20 lineal feet of railing ordered. Complete welded steel railing systems also available and are quoted on a per project basis.

This general pricing is for panel inserts only, and does not include hand or foot railing. Please allow 4-6 weeks for all custom projects, which varies with the size and complexity of the project.
